Five Great Starter Workouts

There’s never any better time to get on a regular fitness routine than right now.  Whether you’re new to workouts or have just been sitting for a bit too long, these five workouts will help ease you (back) into the fitness world.

You can expect to be sore from any workout, because soreness is a sign that you’re working muscles that need attention.  These workouts will leave you a little sore, and definitely sweaty, but they won’t overdo it and definitely won’t leave you dreading your next fitness session.

1. Full Body Cardio Workout for Beginners

Every great workout needs a lot of cardio. It helps get your heart rate up into the fat burning zone, and keep it there long enough to make a difference.  Even better, cardio is great for building endurance.  This ten-minute cardio session is a lot of fun, and just long enough to leave you winded without being so long that it feels like torture.  It’s all about moving your body, too, so you don’t even need a gym!

2. No Gym Full Body Workout

This workout session is meant for beginners, but even experienced gym rats will find it beneficial. It’s a full-body routine, working all of your major muscle groups in just under 15 minutes.  You can expect to sweat, and you’ll probably be sore in places you didn’t expect, but that just means you’re doing it right.  There’s no gym required, but dress comfortably because you’ll be moving quite a bit.

3. Full Body Cardio at Home

Combining the best of the two options above, this full-body home workout is going to kick your butt… but not so bad that you won’t be looking forward to doing it again.  You’ll get a good combination of cardio, legs, upper body and abs in this fast-paced, slightly more challenging beginner session, but it’s also a workout you can do every day without overworking any of your muscles.  It’s designed for home use, but it would be helpful if you have some pads or at least a yoga mat for some floor cushioning.

4. HIIT Home Workout for Beginners

High-Intensity Interval Training, known to gym rats as HIIT, will get your heart rate up into the stratosphere… and keep it there for almost 20 minutes!  If you’re not familiar with HIIT, you’ll do extremely high-intensity exercises like running at an all-out sprint or full burpees for a short period (an interval), then rest for a short period before moving on to the next high-intensity activity.  The rest in between intervals gives you time to recover.  These HIIT workouts are designed for beginners, so more advanced fitness connoisseurs might not find the intensity level quite high enough, but they may be challenging for almost anyone.

5. Low Impact Cardio and Resistance Workout for Beginners

If high-intensity isn’t quite your thing, or if you’re nursing an angry joint, there are many alternatives.  This low-impact workout gives you a great combination of cardio and strength training while still being gentle on common pain points like knees, hips, shoulders and elbows.  The resistance portion of this workout is great for building muscle, and you can do this workout anywhere, but you may need access to some smaller dumbbells to get the most out of it.  The workout runs for just over half an hour, so set aside some time to do the whole thing.
