Meditation Through Movement

The benefits we can get from meditation are various and should not be neglected. Meditation is considered an easy activity, as everybody can dedicate a few minutes of their day to sitting and meditating.

But have you ever heard about movement meditation? This type of meditation is not the same as sitting and concentrating on your breath. Actually, it’s more about moving through different poses at a deliberate and slow pace.

The essential aspect of movement meditation belongs to mindfulness. Think about the situation when you can be mindful of your muscles or the sensation you get from your feet touching the ground as you continue moving. I guess you notice body parts that most of the time are in the unconscious part of your mind, like elbows, hips, or even cheeks; and you are attentive to how your body twists and moves.

What does it mean to be mindful of your body? The answer to this question would be becoming more conscious of your inner sensations, including heartbeat and breathing.

An interesting fact about movement meditation is that it focuses on the body’s movements instead of the movement goal.

Now, let’s get to know the types of moving meditation.

Walking meditation

Walking meditation is the most common and simple practiced exercise to bring calm and interconnectivity to the person. Its art is to increase awareness while moving and walking, and it puts an “alert” of the person’s presence in the exact moment.

Walking meditation seems to be more than just a stroll in the park, right? Even though this type of meditation requires a slower tempo compared to the usual walks, greater concentration, and breathing coordination.

To have the entire effect, walking should continue for a while. So, make sure you choose an appropriate location to move around freely, like your backyard, a nearby park, or if you live close to the beach that could be a great choice.

And lastly, moving meditation like walking will put you in an interaction with the external world which is different when compared to seated meditation.
