Fitness: Showing Up for Your Online Class

Online fitness may be one of the best things to come out of the 2020 pandemic. While online fitness classes were certainly around prior to 2020, the threat of Covid forced many gyms, fitness studios, martial arts dojos and other fitness facilities to move their classes online. Ariana Society members also enjoy online fitness, with classes streaming 24/7 in our upscale digital studio.

But online fitness is not without its pitfalls. Not the least of these is the absence of an in-person trainer or coach to hold you accountable for showing up.

So, how do you hold yourself accountable for showing up to your online fitness session? Thankfully, there are a few ways you can make sure you stay on track with your online classes:

Make it a Routine

Setting a designated time every day when you will work out, go for a run, or at least move will go a long way toward making sure you show up.  For starters, keeping a designated spot on your calendar removes the excuse that you don’t have time.  When your workout is on your schedule, you’ve already made time for it. You can plan for it, and plan around it.  And, after some time of routinely working out at a set time of day, you’ll fall into a daily workout habit.

Make it Habit

Conventional wisdom holds that if you do something for 21 days straight, it becomes a habit. Your fitness schedule is no exception. After just a few weeks of regular workouts, you’re likely to find that you actually miss your workout when you aren’t able to make it. Even better, you may find that you physically just don’t feel as good when you miss your workout.  When you start a fitness habit, you’ve truly taken a significant step toward a healthier lifestyle.

Enlist an Accountability Partner

Sometimes, doing it all on your own isn’t the most effective way to get something done.  In the absence of a trainer calling you or tracking you down when you don’t show up, you can enlist a friend to do the same thing.  Even better, having your friend join you in your workout can make exercise more fun!  Many online fitness programs start from less than $20 per month, so it’s easy for your friend to be by your side in person or virtually.

Condition Your Mind

Whether you establish a workout routine, fall into a fitness habit or need someone to encourage you along the way, the trick is to condition your mind. When your mind is convinced that you look forward to your workout, you won’t have any trouble getting your online fitness class started. In fact, you may very well find that you have trouble pulling yourself away from your new fitness routine!
