Fitness: It’s About Showing Up

Getting started on a fitness plan is hard.  Staying on a fitness plan is hard.  And, it’s OK that it’s hard; if it were easy, everyone would do it.

No matter how far along you are in your fitness journey–whether you’re a gym rat in optimum shape or a newbie just going for the first time–there’s one single part of your workout that is more important that any other component.  It’s not cardio, it’s not leg day, it’s not the weight floor.

It’s simply showing up

That’s right, just getting yourself to the gym or, if you’re training at home, starting your fitness video is the single most important part of your workout.

Why? You can’t have a workout if you never start, and not starting is what keeps many people from being successful. There are a thousand excuses: I don’t have time; I’m tired; the gym is too far; this workout looks hard; I can’t figure out how to start the workout video; the class takes a whole hour.

None of these excuses are valid.  They’re simply not.  If you’re going to get fit and/or stay fit, you absolutely have to start your workout each and every time.  There’s no way around it.

Getting started is the hardest part.

You’ve probably heard this saying many times before.  It may be a cliche, but it’s also true.  For most people, just getting the workout underway is the hardest part.  Once the class is in session, a few things happen:

You realize it’s not that bad.  That’s right, your mind builds up how tired you’ll be, how hard you’ll work, and how annoying the sweat will be.  But, it’s never as bad as your mind makes you believe. In fact, once your class or workout gets started, you’ll probably find you’re having a lot of fun.

Your endorphins kick in.  When you’re working hard, your body produces endorphins that give you a strong boost.  These endorphins help you work out harder, but they’re also a powerful mood enhancer. Endorphins are the reason workouts are natural antidepressants, leaving you positive and energized.

Are you having trouble getting your workout started?

There are lots of ways to work around your mind’s reluctance to getting your workout underway.  In the coming days, we’ll explore a few of these options to help you start–or stay on–your fitness journey.
