Five Rules for Men Wearing a Bracelet

Like many men, you may be wondering just how a bracelet accents your personal style… and if you should even bother wearing one at all.

Generally, fashion experts agree that a bracelet is an excellent accent piece for any man’s wardrobe, but there are a few simple rules you need to keep in mind:

1. Wear Your Bracelet on the Correct Wrist

When you wear a bracelet, your first consideration (and maybe the easiest) is where to wear it. According to fashion website Real Men Style, a bracelet shouldn’t be worn on the same wrist as your watch. Further, bracelets are typically worn on your dominant hand. If you’re right handed, your bracelet belongs on your right wrist (opposite your watch, which belongs on your non-dominant hand).

2. Complement Your Watch, Don’t Overpower It

Because your bracelet is opposite your watch, it should be a nice complement to the timepiece that carries far more monetary and functional value. If you have a large, clunky watch, for example, a heavier bracelet is more acceptable because it adds casual balance. For dressier watches, a nice leather and stainless bracelet provides nice balance. Be sure not to overpower your watch, though; you paid much more for the watch than the bracelet, and each piece should take its place in the hierarchy accordingly.

3. Aim for Balance

Your bracelet should balance in a lot of ways. It should balance your watch, if you choose to wear one, but it should also balance your clothing.  If you’re wearing dark suits, for example, you can balance the look with an upscale black leather and stainless bracelet or, if you’re a little more bold, you can balance the dark colors with lighter–but still upscale and dressy–model. All of your leathers should match, though, so don’t offset a black belt and shoes with a brown bracelet.

4. Tone it Down

Like any jewelry, a bracelet shouldn’t be gaudy.  If your bracelet has shiny metal areas, be sure they’re well worn before you put it in regular rotation. Avoid flashy, gaudy materials, or overly ornate bracelets. If you’re wearing long sleeves–like a warm sweater or a dress shirt–the bracelet should stay under the sleeve and only peek out on occasion. Remember, your bracelet is a subtle expression of your style, not the centerpiece of your wardrobe.

5. Dress Appropriately for the Occasion

As with any wardrobe piece or accessory, it’s critical that your bracelet is appropriate for the occasion.  If you’re hitting up a low-key bar at the beach, a rope bracelet with beads might be appropriate, or maybe a textured, colorful bracelet may be at home if you’re attending an opening at a trendy art gallery.  If you’re going to work and meeting with executives, though, subtle, elegant leather and metal should be your go-to piece.

Bracelets are beautiful, stylish and elegant accent pieces that can really make your wardrobe pop.  Just follow these few simple rules, and you’ll level up your appearance with almost zero effort.
