Italian culture has a longstanding association with coffee that dates back to the 16th century when Venice, a prominent European port, imported coffee beans. Despite more than five centuries have passed, Italy has continued to maintain its status as the global center of coffee, with a deep appreciation for uncomplicated yet top-notch coffee.
Essentially, espresso isn’t a particular kind of coffee bean or roast, but rather a technique of making highly concentrated coffee quickly by forcing hot water through compacted coffee at high pressure. At Society Brew, our team of coffee experts can prepare almost any blend of coffee in an espresso grind.
Luigi Bezzerra, an innovator hailing from Milan, invented espresso in 1901 by passing water through a small quantity of coffee powder, resulting in a quick-to-prepare drink that was named espresso because of its rapid preparation for each patron.
The espresso, despite its simplicity, became a symbol of the future in the early 2000s and is named after a high-speed train. Interestingly, the cost of espresso in New York and Italy is quite comparable, with prices ranging from $2-$3 in New York and from 0.7 to 1.1 euros in Italy.
It is well-known that Italians have a strong affection for everything related to coffee, but how did this affection develop?
Despite the fact that coffee beans do not grow in Italy, as they flourish in equatorial regions, historical peculiarities and the invention of espresso are “responsible” for the Italian love for coffee.
Consequently, while coffee may have originated from various parts of the world, Italy has given us its coffee culture, complete with customs and traditions that we continue to follow to this day.
