Let’s Talk Some Coffee

Coffee has become a customary part of many people’s daily routines, which is why it is widely recognized as one of the most popular drinks globally.

The term used for coffee varies across different cultures; originally in Yemen, it was referred to as “qahwah,” which was a romanticized term for wine. However, in Turkish culture, it evolved into “kahveh,” while in Dutch, it is called “koffie,” and in English, it is simply known as “coffee.”

But, do you know how coffee became popular? Let me tell you the story.

According to a renowned Ethiopian myth, Kaldi, a goat herder, stumbled upon the discovery of coffee when he observed his goats becoming energetic after eating a red fruit from the coffee plant. Intrigued, Kaldi tried the fruit himself and experienced the same effect. He then gave the fruit to his family members who also stayed awake throughout the night, potentially due to the fruit’s high caffeine content.

Muslim communities were already familiar with coffee’s stimulating traits and its ability to help during lengthy prayer sessions.

During the early 1700s, the renowned beverage known as “coffee” was introduced to the New World after the Boston Tea Party of 1773. Following this event, drinking coffee became a patriotic duty as people switched from tea to coffee. Coffee continued to be popular among soldiers during the Civil War due to its caffeine content, which helped boost their energy. As a result, coffee consumption grew and it has remained the most popular energy booster ever since, according to Society Brew Coffee.

It is common knowledge that coffee undergoes various preparations before it can be enjoyed as our preferred morning drink. It may come as a surprise, but coffee, in its raw form, is a fruit resembling a cherry, with the coffee bean situated at the center. Coffee possesses natural stimulant properties, which also make it effective as a built-in pesticide, safeguarding the fruit from pests.

The emphasis on quality in the coffee industry today is a direct result of its past. Regardless of its origins, coffee remains a beloved and widely consumed beverage in the United States, just as much as in the rest of the world.
